Put on Christmas costumes and ride a bike through Jackson Heights on Sunday

Santa will lead a family-friendly bike through Jackson Heights, Corona and East Elmhurst this Sunday.

The annual Santa Bike Ride will start at 9:45 am at the Gorman Playground on 30th Avenue and 85th Street in East Amherst.

The three-mile drive is the fourth year and will use 34 and 30 avenue bike lanes through three blocks.

Children and adults are strongly advised to wear Christmas costumes such as reindeer or snowman. Last year, 90 people participated in the event and it is expected that more people will participate this year.

The driver will be escorted along this route near the 115th district. Children 7 years of age or older can ride alone if they wear a helmet. Children under the age of 7 are welcome to ride but are travelling with adults.

The Jackson Heights Beautification Group will provide snacks, hot cocoa, coffee, etc. at the end of the trip.

The ride was organized by Rodney Corcino, who founded Ciclistas Latinoamericanos in New York to promote cycling, especially in the Latino community.

Corcino said the purpose of the event was to have fun and to use cycling as an alternative means of transportation.

“We want to raise our awareness of cycling and let people know that they can use these bike lanes to get where they need to go,” Corcino said. “This is a safer way to connect to the park and provide transportation options for future children.”

The event was funded by the Jackson Heights Beautification Group from the NYC Parks-Build Healthier Communities Grant.

Nuala Doherty, head of the Jackson Heights Beautification Group, said cycling is a good way for new riders to become familiar with other modes of transportation.

“These rides are designed to encourage those who are afraid to ride on the street,” Dougherty said. “Even if you are not a combative bike rider, you can ride safely.”
